One of the The main reasons for the excellent quality of life in the Mercer County area is the quality of leadership and involvement of its residents.  The purpose of the Youth Leadership Mercer County Program is to prepare future leaders for leadership roles within the community and increase the quality and quantity of men and women capable of accepting leadership roles in various community organizations.

Participants are exposed to a variety of social and economic issues and opportunities facing Mercer County. The goal is to develop a source of informed civic-oriented leaders interested in directing the future of Mercer County, Ohio.

With input from community leaders, this program has been designed and developed by the Celina-Mercer County Chamber of Commerce.  After studying other successful programs in Ohio, the Chamber has molded a program, which best fits, the needs of our community.  The program consists of eight (8) full-day class sessions held one day per month from August thru April.  The program includes orientation and graduation sessions and individualized training.  Each session focuses on selected topics representing key community issues and will be held at various community locations.  During each session, participants are introduced to issues by means of panel, lectures, on-site visits, group discussions and simulations.  In each case, the program is designed to address specific areas rather than vague concepts.

Participants are recommended by their school administration and demonstrate potential leadership qualities.  Participants are motivated and committed to serve the community.  Participation in the session represents a significant commitment of time and dedication by the participants.  Attendance at ALL sessions is required for graduation.  In the case of an emergency, participants may apply for an excused absence.  A project component is required during the leadership program.  This project is developed within assigned groups as the program progresses.

A maximum of three (3) participants from each high school in the county will be accepted into the Youth Leadership Mercer County Program.  Wright State University college credits are offered upon completion of the program.
